Over the process of reviewing a ton of teeth whitening pens, we not only found the best teeth whitening pen, we added it to our routine. And that is because, there’s nothing like the convenience of whitening your teeth on the go.
Now, routine makes it sound like a big ordeal, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It literally takes seconds to apply and you’re on your way. No trays, no mess, no hassle.
However, convenience means nothing if the product doesn’t work. And we tried countless teeth whitening pens with little result. But, through the process, we found 3 teeth whitening pens that worked amazing. And one pen that has a coveted spot in our handbag.
When we set out to find the best teeth whitening pen, we had no clue what to look for. Our typical teeth whitening routine has always involved trays from the dentist and a whole week of going without coffee. And wine. And blueberries…
So, in order to find out what to look for in a teeth whitening pen, we reached out to a professional and asked way too many questions. However, we got the answers needed to find the best teeth whitening pen.
Are teeth whitening pens safe?
Teeth whitening pens are safe as long as they’re used as recommended. But, there are some potential side effects and these side effects will vary from person to person.
Because of the use of peroxide, tooth sensitivity and gum sensitivity are the most common side effects. However, these side effects are no more prevalent in teeth whitening pens than with other whitening treatments.
It is recommended that you spot test for possible sensitivities before going full on board.
What about the ingredients?
The main ingredient used in teeth whitening pens is hydrogen peroxide, which is widely used by dentists and in over the counter whitening products. And, the consensus seems to agree, it is safe for your teeth. However, in high quantities, it can cause side effects such as tooth and gum sensitivity. Also, the long term effects of using peroxide as a teeth whitener are relatively unknown.
Some whitening pens use Carbamide peroxide instead. Once applied, Carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea. Where as hydrogen peroxide reacts instantly and best when exposed to light, Carbamide peroxide takes longer to react. Making it a great choice for at-home use.
Another aspect that makes Carbamide peroxide great for at-home use is its shelf life. It has a much longer shelf life than hydrogen peroxide.
There are some teeth whitening pens that use Ammonium hydroxide. Upon further investigation, we found that Ammonium hydroxide can be toxic. And if you need any reassurance of this, it is banned from cosmetics in several countries.
Other ingredients used, such as glycerin, sucralose, xylitol and propylene glycol, aren’t ingredients to be all that worried about. In fact, ingredients like xylitol can help inhibit tooth decay and helps repair tooth enamel.
What are the advantages of teeth whitening pens?
There are a few advantages of using a pen to whiten your teeth. First of all, the convenience. It’s literally as quick as brushing it across your teeth, letting it dry and you’re off and running.
Another advantage is not having to deal with the trays or strips and the extra saliva it tends to create. Also, they can be time-consuming and restrictive. Not to mention, trays can be uncomfortable to sleep with.
Third of all, if you need to whiten individual teeth, this is definitely the treatment you want to choose.
Lastly, teeth whitening pens are amazing when you’re out and about. And especially after that one glass of wine that horrifyingly turns your teeth purple. A good teeth whitening pen will erase that in a sec.
Do teeth whitening pens work?
Yes! As long as you get the right one. We tried many different pens and our final few picks are the ones that left the best results. Such as, whiter and brighter teeth.
Best Teeth Whitening Pen
Best Teeth Whitening Pen *Editor’s Pick
Smilebriter Teeth Whitening Gel Pens
This was our favorite pick by far and the winner of Best Teeth Whitening Pen.
Within a matter of days, we were able to see results. Not only were we able to see results, it was relatively painless. In fact, pain-free.
Now, this pick wasn’t because it whitened our teeth better than the others. In fact, all of our picks did an amazing job. We picked this teeth whitening pen because the ingredients are what made it stand out.
Not only does it only have 5 ingredients, the fewest ingredients out of any of our picks, the 5 ingredients are deemed safe for teeth whitening.
The Smilebriter Teeth Whitening Gel Pens comes with four whitening pens which equals a 120 day supply. It contains 44% of carbamide peroxide, which equals 17% of hydrogen peroxide.
Not only that, the company claims that this formula will help reduce tooth decay and sensitivity.
However, if you are prone to sensitivities, it’s best to do a spot treatment first. You can never be too safe.
The application of Smilebriter is as simple as brushing it on your teeth and allowing it to dry for 30 seconds.
And, you just go on about your day.
AuraGlow Teeth Whitening Pen
This teeth whitening pen came in a close second. The only aspect that prevented it from becoming the best teeth whitening pen is the amount of ingredients.
The AuraGlow Teeth Whitening Pen has just a few more ingredients than our top pick.
Another aspect to consider is, AuraGlow has 35% carbamide peroxide while Smilebrite contains 44%.
However, on a positive note, the AuraGlow Teeth Whitening Pen contains xylitol, which is known to help prevent tooth decay and repair tooth enamel.
So, which one whitens better? We really couldn’t tell the difference. Both pens seemed to whiten just effectively.
And not only did AuraGlow whiten effectively, we didn’t have any issues with sensitivity. Many users that are prone to sensitivities have stated they didn’t have any issues either.
Therefore, if you’re sensitive towards teeth whitening, this might be a great product for you to try. And, again, do a spot test to measure your tolerance.
And finally, the AuraGlow pen gives you around 20 whitening treatments. Making it a great buy for a test run.
Smileactives Original Advanced Tooth Whitening Pen
This particular whitening pen worked great. However, we found one of the ingredients to be concerning. As we stated earlier, some whitening products contain ammonium hydroxide, which is known to be toxic. And, it has been banned from cosmetics in a few different countries.
Well, Smileactives Original Advanced Tooth Whitening Pen contains ammonium hydroxide.
Not only is ammonium hydorxide known to be toxic, it is also an irritant. And an irritant has no business being near sensitive tissue like our gums.
We, at FHL, try our best to introduce only the healthiest products without negating results. Yes, we liked this pen. But after further research, we just didn’t want to continue needlessly inviting toxins into our body. Especially when the other two whitening pens worked just as good.
You may ask why are we even introducing this pen? Well, it is one of the better pens on the market. It works fantastic. And, we want people to be aware of what you’re inviting into your life.
Of course, this in hopes to spread the word and make sure people look at the ingredients and think twice before making a purchase.
And, in the hopes that one day, never having to look at the ingredients to ensure our safety.
