Before we reveal the best waist trainer, it’s important to be completely informed on what you’re getting yourself into.  Health is a huge priority of ours and we would like to help you mitigate risk if at all possible.

Secondly, there are many different types of waist trainers available.  So, if you proceed with waist training, getting the right waist trainer is crucial for your lifestyle and perceived results.

Best Waist Trainer

There are many questions about waist training and below, we cover the most pressing questions out there – starting from the beginning.

What is Waist Training?

Waist training is the process of reducing your waistline and ultimately, achieving an hourglass figure.  In the simplest terms, it’s accentuating the curves above and below your waist.

And, this is not a new phenomenon.  Corsets or waist trainers, as we now refer to them, were invented in France in 1577 to help achieve a more slender physique.  Jump ahead to the 20th century, and these have made a comeback.  Only now, they’re mainly used to accentuate curves.

How Does Waist Training Work?

Waist training works by essentially cinching or velcro-ing an undergarment around your waist.  When you wear a waist trainer, it temporarily shapes your midsection.  And when you wear it for long enough to sweat, it will rid your tummy of water weight.  Thus, creating a suctioned affect.

To begin, it is recommended you wear the waist trainer for 2-4 hours and slowly work your way up by adding an extra hour every few weeks.  Or, when you feel your waist is ready for the next level.  Eventually, you should be able to wear the waist trainer all day, without discomfort.

Is Waist Training Safe?

This is a tough one to answer and you will get varying opinions from either side of the spectrum.  Here at FHL, we err on the side of natural and prefer to shape our midsection via cardio, sit-ups and yoga.  However, we are not necessarily opposed to waist training.  Waist training can be miraculous for improving posture and ridding the midsection of water weight.  However, moderation to us is key.

That all being said, in order to mitigate injury, it is imperative to listen to your body.  Suffocating your midsection is not the answer!  Start slow and work your way up.  If the waist trainer feels tight, then your body is telling you to loosen it.  If you don’t loosen it, your body will respond.  And that response is something you don’t want to deal with.

This is one instance where, no pain – no gain does not apply.  Of number one importance, there are ribs and organs involved.

In addition, some people will advise that you do not work out with a waist trainer unless you need lumbar support.  The reason being, when working out with a waist trainer, your abs don’t have the ability to breathe or create movement.  Therefore, your muscles won’t be able to develop accordingly.

It is very possible though, to use the waist trainer for cardio so you sweat out the water weight while doing sit-ups without the trainer to maintain muscle definition in your abs.  This, perhaps, is the best case scenario if you decide to waist train.

Does Waist Training Really Work?

The short answer, yes.  However, the results vary.  Furthermore, the results are temporary.  The best results are noticed when you are actually wearing the waist trainer.  Or, you have worn it for long enough to sweat out all of your water weight.  But, without constant maintenance, your waist will shape right back to where it was.

In the end, you’ll have to ask yourself…”Is it really worth it?”

Which Waist Trainer Works Best?

If you are still reading, it is most likely you’re still considering waist training.  Therefore, we have put together a guideline to help you choose the correct and the best waist trainer for your situation.  There are three types of trainers:

  • Belt:  This wrap-around trainer usually binds via velcro.  Usually made of breathable mesh, it is touted as the most comfortable and the best waist trainer for beginners.  Also, it tends to have more focus on lumbar support.
  • Cincher:  The cincher is typically made of breathable mesh and cinches together with metal hooks in the front.  It also tends to be fairly stretchy and is best used by a beginner or as a step up from the belt.
  • Corset:  The celebrity-loving corset is the least comfortable out of all waist trainers and is best used by veterans.  Starting off with one of these will quickly turn you off.  Therefore, it’s best to start off with a belt or a cincher.  The corset is steel boned, meaning, it has vertical steel posts that will keep it’s shape and prevent crinkling.  It historically laces up the back and cinches via metal hinges in the front.  Although, some of the newer versions, and especially the waist trainer versions, do not lace up the back.  Usually made of non-breathable latex, this is the best waist trainer for sweating and ultimately, reducing water weight.

How Do I Size Myself for a Waist Trainer?

There are four different points in order to fit yourself for a waist trainer.

  • Underbust:  Standing tall, wrap the measuring tape around your bra line.
  • Waist:  Standing tall, wrap the measuring tape around your waist, right above your belly button.
  • Hip:  Standing tall, wrap the measuring tape right below your hip bone.
  • Torso:  In a seated position, measure lengthwise from your bra line to the crease that separates your leg from your hip.

Now, on to the best waist trainers on the market.  And the best waist trainers for every skill level.
